Angelica has quite a long history in both medieval medicine and superstitious folklore and was considered to provide protection from evil spirits as well as the plague. Used today in many elements of cookery from additions to gin and wines to candied Angelica for cake decorating. It does get credit for aiding in digestion, stimulating production of digestive juices, helping to treat flatulence and spasms.
