Peltophorum africanum
This deciduous tree is known for its graceful, drooping branches that create a soft, weeping effect, making it a lovely focal point in outdoor spaces. It is native to Southern Africa and has a wide variety of medicinal using including sore throats, wounds, infertility and de-worming, to name a few. Also known as the toilet paper tree, the leaves have a soft velvety feel that make them an easy choice when faced with a lack of toilet paper in the bush.
The Weeping Wattle features bright yellow flowers that bloom in clusters, adding a splash of color during the flowering season. Its lush, green foliage provides a beautiful backdrop throughout the year, offering shade and a habitat for local wildlife. It is an excellent tree for beekeepers and can be grown in Zones 9-11. This hardy tree is well-suited for a variety of soil types and is drought-tolerant once established, making it a practical choice for gardeners looking for low-maintenance options however, it is sensitive to frost for the first 3 years.
As a bonsai, this tree is the perfect specimen, it develops adult shape in just 2-4 years with a thick corky bark and reduced leaves.
