Black Sesame
The tastier brother to white / yellow sesame, Black Sesame is without a doubt the better option when looking for the heftier option between the two.
It has a nutty, ever so slightly bitter flavor that really sets it apart from the traditional sesame so often used in cooking and confectionery.
The beautiful white flowers will develop into a swollen capsule, that literally pop open, giving rise to the saying 'open sesame'. One of the oldest know oil crops, sesame in both the white and black forms are very high in oils, approaching over 50% oil content.
A simple viability test is to chew a few seeds, if they are rancid they probably will not germinate. However being a high oil seed, sesame typically is only viable for 2-3 years.
