Capsicum annuum
Hangjiao No. 4, better known as Comet’s Tail, is a chilli pepper with a truly cosmic origin. In 1987, Chinese scientists launched pepper seeds into space aboard a satellite, hoping to induce natural mutations through exposure to cosmic radiation and zero gravity. From this bold experiment came Comet’s Tail—an eye-catching variety with long, curling, deeply ridged pods that seem to trail like a comet across the sky.
Highly regarded in China for its unique form, consistent yields, and balanced heat, this space-born variety has earned fans around the world. Fruits can reach up to 30 cm in length, turning glossy red as they ripen. With a moderate heat level (3,000–5,000 SHU), the flavour is fruity and slightly smoky—perfect for stir-fries, sauces, pickling, and drying into chilli flakes or powder.
Start seeds indoors 8–10 weeks before your last frost, planting 5 mm deep in a light, well-draining medium. Keep soil temperatures above 20 °C for best germination, which typically takes 10–20 days. Transplant once night temperatures stay above 15 °C.
Comet’s Tail plants are compact, reaching 50–70 cm in height, and grow well in garden beds, containers, or tunnels. They thrive in full sun with fertile, consistently moist soil. Known for its generous productivity and striking appearance, this variety adds visual flair and reliable performance to any summer garden—making it both a culinary standout and a conversation starter.
